The transformation of Pennsatucky from cartoon character to fully-formed human reflects a growing trend for “Orange,” however. That would have been unthinkable in Season 1. Is slowly but surely coming to terms with who she is and what choices she’s made and, beyond that, she’s able to take that growth as a person and use it as a mirror to be a good friend to Boo, a relationship It’s not just that Pennsatucky has become a more likable character, but rather that the character has grown from something vile into something more empathetic and compassionate in a way that feels natural. Since theīeatdown and consequent replacement of her awful teeth with something considerably more stylish, the show has seen, if not a gentler Pennsatucky, then an individual significantly more mellow and open. She was originally an unhinged former drug addict who espoused her virulent homophobia and religious fanaticism at the smallest provocation, culminating in a vicious fight with Piper in the Season 1 finale. Of all the character calibrations that have taken place since Season 1 of “Orange Is the New Black,” none have been as drastic or as necessary as those that have been undergone by Pennsatucky.
